When hiring, almost every employer lists in the candidate requirements section “great communication skills, good command of computer skills, and no less than 3 years of experience.”

But what if you’re a student who has just finished college and is entering the workforce for the first time?

One reason why employers don’t want candidates without any work experience is that they are simply scared to trust a newcomer who’s never worked in a team and needs to be trained. Nevertheless, many employers have started reconsidering their position about job experience.

Hiring people with no experience often turns out to be beneficial, as the candidates who have no previous job experience put more effort into what they do at the workplace and often prove to be more diligent and responsible.

If you’re passionate about getting a certain position but don’t have any relevant job experience, you could still make it happen. The first step you need to work hard on is writing your resume, which will create the image of you in the eyes of your future employer.

Having said that, let’s take a look at some tips on how to write a winning resume when you have no work experience.

Pick a Format

When working on your resume, you should pick the most readable and flexible format. You don’t want to confuse the employer with huge chunks of text, inappropriate font, and glaring colors. Your resume should be tidy and look put together.

You can come up with a resume format yourself, but there are also lots of free resume samples you can use as a template. For instance, Microsoft Word offers over fifty resume samples.

You simply open the program, type in the search tab the type of a sample you need (resume in our case), and pick the one you like best.

There are also several other great services with very creative resume templates. If you’re interested, you can look through the following:

  • . Check out ready to use resume templates and learn more about creating a winning resume with this tool.
  • . Have your resume written by an expert who will also give you useful tips and recommendations, and help you proofread your resume.
  • . This is a huge database with over 1000 templates, including resumes and cover letters.

It’s never a bad idea to utilize a pre-existing resume template designed professionals. But you can also look through the templates on the internet to get inspired and create a great resume of your own!

List Work-Like Experiences

If you’ve just finished college or university and don’t have any job experience to impress future employers with, you might want to think about the work-like experience you had during those years of studying.

If you’ve ever been a tutor or volunteered abroad or in the US, you have viable work-like experience. If you had an internship, this also counts as good work-like experience.

Work experience doesn’t necessarily include jobs where you got paid. It can be any area where you applied your knowledge and qualifications. But how can you put it on your resume?

  • Start your resume with education and academic experience. Here you should mention your education, as well as all work-like experience connected with your qualifications. It should be on top and visible to the interviewer.
  • Keep the descriptions brief and concise. You don’t need to tell all the details. If you get asked about your work-like experience during the interview, you’ll have plenty of time to fill in employers.
  • If you have volunteering experience or an internship to list in your resume, make sure that you’ll be able to provide an accompanying letter of recommendation, or at least a phone number of a manager who was responsible for you.

Include Your Skills

Skills that you list on your resume should be relevant to the job position you’re applying for. If you have additional skills, you can list them in the section where you want to put your hobbies and interests.

For this section, you might need to take your time and think a little bit about which beneficial skills you have to showcase, and which are relevant to the job position.

You might also search for a list of useful job skills for a particular field to analyze them and ask yourself whether you can put them on your resume or not.

For example, if you’re applying to be a secretary or a personal assistant, you might need to consider the following skills:

  • presentation
  • verbal communication
  • writing
  • collaboration
  • problem solving
  • critical thinking

Your list of skills will depend on the job position you want to apply for. But don’t lie about your skills: if the employer is interested and you get hired, you will need to prove that you’re in fact the person you claim to be.

Final Thoughts

You can put a lot of things on your resume: your educational background (including any time spent studying abroad), academic excellence, skills, hobbies, and interests. The main point of a resume when you don’t have any job experience is to show that you’re an intelligent and responsible person, eager to learn and practice your skills.

A resume is your short biography. But you need to remember to keep it brief. If the employer is interested, you’ll have plenty of time to tell them about all the wonderful experiences you’ve had during the interview process. Good luck!

I’m afraid that resumes of people with no work experience are still less often viewed than those with experience.
    But that’s another problem.
It is very important to be able to describe all your skills and abilities in such a way as to persuade your employer to consider you. I am now looking for a job (at the same time as studying), and unfortunately, I receive many rejections. It’s hard to make a short resume, but I’ll try to remove nonprofessional information from it (I thought that additional skills would be my advantage, but probably not).
